Excellent!

The art style & audio design

It’s a crime that this adorable and colorful art direction exists solely in ReMix. I’d love a main Pokémon title that went with something like this, instead of obsessing over an aesthetic that’s half flat-textured monsters and half shoddy “hyperrealistic” backgrounds.

Hearing the footage I compiled made me nostalgic. The sound effects are snappy, with my favorites being when chestnuts and pumpkins are broken. The music - recycled from Shuffle, from the time of X & Y’s French themes - is pleasant on the ears. I desperately want this game to not suck so I can keep enjoying its noises.

Pokémon costume (that I obtained): Rowlet in a top hat

I’m so predictable. I fell head over heels for precious Rowlet dressed up all fancy. This was a Battle Pass outfit, and I will never regret tossing $10 for it.

Teammates: Munchlax, Togepi

I was surprised by how flexible Munchlax’s skill applied to each level’s board. It removes a moderate square area of icons/obstacles, and then swaps a few icons into Megaphones, which clear anything in a small line. Megaphones show up in random directions, but can help clutch a victory in the level.

Togepi will swap the nearest icons into the most common Pokémon on the board. Linking giant chains of icons is one of those little dopamine generators.

AWFUL

Obstacle: iced coffee cubes

These jerks debuted as I was approaching the game’s paywall. Using your Pokémon’s special skill is mandatory to clear these; there’s no other way around them. You need enough chains and combos to build up the skill’s energy requirements, so naturally these cubes love to block you from reaching more icons on the board.

Costume (that I got): “Squeaky Clean” Minccino

Wow! The colors congeal into Minncino’s! HOW EXCITING!

Thankfully, this was a freebie outfit… and it shows.

Teammates:

Pichu.

Okay wait, a couple more: Audino & Wobbuffet

Wobuffet

Both of these Pokémon have the same playstyle; they can’t directly remove anything on the board. Instead, they generate a wide ring of Megaphones. And since those spawn in random directions, good luck hitting your targets.
