Character/Battle: Doctor Orange, Green Mage

Honestly, all of Everhood’s soundtrack slaps. But when pressed to pick a couple favorites, these two dorks are the first to pop into my head.

Doctor Orange is a great totally-not-Eggman parody. I love his sniveling beep speak noises and expressions. His battle is humorous in that he discovers how to avoid triggering an official battle, forcing the player to dodge his bullet hell in the overworld map. Clever!

(I say “point-based seizure” in the video, but I read the term from a random comment. Might not be a real term.)

Green Mage is my favorite character overall. His design is simple & sleek, his voice sounds awesome, and his battle music is catchy. He’s the resident asshole archetype, but later on he shows his vulnerable side.

Battle: flower shop salesman

While his tune is also catchy, flower guy resorts to obscuring parts of the screen for cheap hits.

Don’t pull a Drakengard 3 on me, man. That’s not cool.

Some of Everhood’s other battles warp the screen, but they don’t outright hide the player’s view.

Pink (spoiler talk)

Pink is completely redundant to the plot.

Pink’s anguish as a grim reaper is already experienced through the lens of Red Mage. During the game’s “side B,” many characters are fearful of the unknown and scream at the player in rage. However, this struggle helps them find peace and learn to let go. The emotional ups and downs work just fine in this part of the game.

Once the third act arrives, Pink steps in to nail into everyone’s head how stressful and scary being a grim reaper is. I know this, Pink. Stop padding out the game’s runtime and dragging down the impact of Red Mage’s arc.
